About Our Church

First Baptist Church of Memphis is located in Midtown Memphis at the corner of Poplar Avenue and East Parkway. This historic church has served Memphis and the Mid-South as a lighthouse of hope and love for over 170 years.

We are an accepting family of faith where all are invited to worship, to serve and to grow.

An accepting family of faith Church for us is more than just a service organization or club.  It is a true spiritual “family” in every sense of the word. We enjoy being together, worshipping together, serving together, praying for each other, caring for each other in times of need, and having fun with each other at recreation events, movie nights, and our weekly Wednesday night Fellowship Dinner.  Through Christ, God has accepted us, thus we strive to a be a community where believers and seekers alike can belong and support one another as we seek to be God’s people for the living of this day.

To Worship --  We believe the scripture which says, “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness."  Our worship services are reverent but warm and always focused on proclaiming God’s grace and truth through word, song, and the most creative means possible.  We seek to enable every participant to connect the story of their life to the story of Christ so that all may hear Christ’s call to “come and follow me.”  As is often said at the beginning of our worship, “No matter who you are or what road has led you here, we are glad you are here and we welcome you to worship with us.”

To Serve – We believe that as disciples of Christ, we are to join God in God’s salvific work which seeks to bring wholeness to every aspect of every individual’s life.  We seek to connect our members with meaningful and difference-making opportunities for giving and service.  Our missions motto is “To serve around the world and across the street,” and that is what we do. While sending groups on mission trips to places as near as Louisiana and as far as Uganda, we also support numerous national and international mission agencies, including Crosslink, a medical supply ministry, which is housed in our own building.  Just as strong however is our commitment to serve “across the street.”  Some 15 years ago, the church had an opportunity to move out of midtown, but voted to stay, because God had given First Baptist a heart for the heart of our great city.  In seeking to minister to midtown and the greater mid-South area we offer a Christian Weekday Education Ministry, we host several summer and school-year ministries for urban youth and children, we serve as a day site for Memphis Interfaith Hospitality Network, we host a Laotian congregation, and we host offices for the Samaritan Counseling Center of the Mid-South.  In addition we gladly support and serve in numerous area ministries such as the Church Health Center and Rachel’s Kids.  We are currently very excited about developing opportunities to serve our Binghampton neighbors in even more significant and productive ways.  We invite you to come and serve with us.

To Grow – We believe that being disciples involves faith formation as we learn to become more faithful followers of Christ. To this end we engage in personal and group Bible Study and Prayer, we participate in retreats, and we develop our knowledge and skills so that we can serve more effectively.  We offer regular Sunday and Wednesday opportunities for every age.  Our Sunday School rotation model for children offers a wide variety of Bible learning experiences including the arts, writing, science, and even cooking!  On Wednesdays our youth and children learn about music and missions while our adults engage in study around the table.  And while other opportunities are offered throughout the week here at the church, especially for our seniors, we also are excited about our new community groups for adults of all ages which meet in homes on given evenings throughout the midsouth area.  If you’re looking for an opportunity to think about faith or grow in your faith, we welcome you to join us.

First Baptist is a historic, yet progressive and inclusive Baptist church.  Following Christ and rooted in scripture, we hold to the historic Baptist distinctives of Soul Competency, the Priesthood of all Believers, the Autonomy of the local Church, and Religious Freedom.  We believe that God calls both men and women to serve in positions of leadership including minister and deacon.  We chose to partner with a variety of Christian and service agencies as we seek to share the love of Christ.

Our Mission Statement:

The First Baptist Church of Memphis is a faith community seeking to help all persons know God through Jesus Christ, forming them spiritually in the image of Christ, and ministering in the name of Christ.

Please, continue to look through the pages of this website. Consider the many opportunities for worship and service, and if any of it sounds exciting, rewarding, and fulfilling; then First Baptist could very well be the right church for you.  We would love to talk with you, answer your questions, and welcome you for a visit.
