History

The Pastorate of Dr. R.J. Bateman
1931-1943

First Baptist Church's War Relief Efforts

Dr. R.J. Bateman was called as pastor in 1931 and continued to lead in the growth of the church, serving with distinction in the local association and the state and national convention. It was during his pastorate that First Baptist celebrated its centennial and purchased the first piece of property at the corner of Poplar Avenue and East Parkway, where it would eventually move. One memorable highlight of his pastorate was his leadership of Memphis ministers who called the city together for prayers for peace over the radio as Europe steeled itself for the inevitable conflict of war. Dr. Bateman continued the radio ministry begun by his predecessor, but his pastorate would be cut short by his death from an undisclosed illness in 1943.
